2019-2020 Cheerleader & Mascot Tryout

Cheer Tryouts: Thursday, March 7th 2019

     *Note: More detailed information will be given in the application and at the Mandatory Parent Meeting.

STEP ONE:Attend the MANDATORY Parent Meeting Tuesday, February 19, 2019 — Northwest High School in the Student Union at 6:00 p.m.  

Bring a pen and an electronic device to complete an online application.      

Bring a Current Medical Physical dated AFTER February 1st & a copy of your FIRST SEMESTER Report Card  

Tryout Information Packets will be handed out.ALL forms, with signatures, are due at the end of the meeting EXCEPT for the AP Recommendation Form, 1st-4th 6 weeks report card, and physical dated after Feb 1st.

Outline of Parent Meeting: Director of Fine Arts, Kevin Lacefield, will discuss the 2019-2020 Cheer Constitution, and Tryout Process, in which all candidates and guardians must complete a Participation Contract. Other Required Forms will be distributed at this time.

Attend the MANDATORY Tryout Clinic (AP RECOMMENDATION FORM and ANY OTHERS NOT TURNED IN ARE DUE before the first clinic day!!!)

Monday-Wednesday, March 4-6, 2019 — Gym (room 511) of Northwest High School from 4:30–6:30 p.m. This clinic is to teach candidates the tryout dance and become familiarized with the tryout process. Please arrive on time and dressed in appropriate tryout attire. (See below) Those candidates who are not willing to cooperate or be courteous and respectful toward others will be asked to leave the clinic. Doors will close at 4:30 pm. Failure to attend will concede participation in the cheer tryout process. All Required Forms are DUE: Current Medical Physical (click link to open form), Participant Contract, Release Form, Assistant Principal Recommendation,  FIRST SEMESTER Report Card.

Cheerleader Tryouts for 2019-2020 Thursday, March 7, 2019: Northwest High School Texan Gym from 4:30–to conclusion.

Varsity and JV candidates arrive at gym 511 at 4:30 p.m. for check-in. Freshman candidates arrive at gym 511 at 5:30 p.m. for check-in. Candidates MUST have completed ALL previous requirements to attend. Please arrive on time and dressed in appropriate tryout attire. (See below) Doors will close at 4:30 p.m. for JV and Varsity Candidates. Doors will close at 5:30 p.m. for Freshman Candidates. Please bring your own water bottle and a snack. Cell phones are not permitted. Any candidate caught with cell phone will immediately be dismissed. 


Required Skills for Cheerleader Tryouts: Small Group Dance (Spirited Entrance Optional), Running Tumbling, 3 Jump Combination: Toe Touch and 2 other connected jumps of candidate choice Individual Cheer with Standing Tumbling or Toe Touch.

Required Skills Mascot Tryouts: Original Mascot Skit: 2 minutes maximum Candidates must wear complete Mascot Uniform at Tryouts

May use 2 Cheerleader Candidates to assist with props or skits.

Tryouts: Red athletic shorts, spanx, plain white t-shirt, spanx, white no show socks, tennis shoes, and a pony tail

During tryouts, candidates are NOT allowed to wear any clothing or shoes that would indicate a current or previous NHS cheerleader! NO cell phones throughout the entire duration of the tryouts! Friends and family are NOT allowed inside the building during tryouts.

For Future Reference: Other Mandatory Dates for NHS Cheerleaders (Note:More dates to come!!)“So You Made It” Meeting: Tuesday, March 19 at 6:00 p.m. in NHS Lecture Hall; Uniform Fitting: Thursday, March 21 from 3:00–5:30 p.m. in Cheer Locker Room. Afterwards, you will receive a checklist to request specific items you wish to order and your coach will email you a personalized bill for your remaining balance. Cheer Camp: June 23-25 at Gaylord Texan in Grapevine.
