Prospective 2021 Band Members

Welcome

Welcome future Northwest HS band members! We are excited for you to join the Northwest HS program next year! Transitioning to high school can feel overwhelming. Band will help ease many of the insecurities or questions that you may have. For many of our Band members, this is home. This is family.

High school opens up many more fun and exciting performance opportunities that you have never had before. From Concert Band, Jazz Band, Marching Band, Color guard, and Drumline, there is a place for you!

We are looking forward to meeting and working with you over the coming months. Later this spring, we will hold a few marching band sessions, where we will cover everything you need to know as you come to the high school. First, you need to understand that NO PREVIOUS MARCHING EXPERIENCE is required. We understand that this will be a new experience for you. These sessions will help you transition comfortably into high school as you join our Northwest HS Band family.

Marching Band

The marching band includes every student enrolled in a band class, and rehearses up to 8 hours per week. The band represents Northwest High School at varsity football games and various area and state marching contests.


2021 Spring Dates

Marching Band Basics – New members and future leaders

·        Saturday, April 24th - (8:30 - 11:00 AM)

·       Saturday, May 15th - (8:30 – 11:00 AM)

An introduction to the Marching Band experience. Covered in this session will be the basics of movement presented in a fun but fast paced environment. All incoming freshmen that will be involved in the NHS band are expected to attend.

 

2021 Summer Dates

Marching Band 101 - EVERYONE - NHS Band fees for the year are $300.00 which is broken up into 4 payments of $75.00. The first payment is due on supply night (Thurs, June 3rd) 

·      Wednesday June  2nd - (7:30 AM -11:30AM)
Thursday, June 3rd - (7:30 AM -11:30AM)

A more in depth look into the Marching Band experience. Covered in this session will be more movement exercises and drill. All students that will be involved in any part of the marching band are required to attend.


2021 Monday Night Music

·       June 14th, 28th, July 12th  (6:00 -8:15 PM)

These three Mondays are reserved for a music rehearsal. Although these are not required, if you are in town you should plan to attend.


2021 Drumline Camp

·       Monday, July 12th – Friday the 16th (9 AM- 4 PM)

Open to all current percussionist in the program. These camps will cover the fundamentals of drumline and front ensemble (there is no extra fee involved in this camp)

2021 Color guard Camp

·       Monday, July 12th – Friday the 16th (9 AM- 4 PM)

Open to all current color guard members in the program. These camps will cover the fundamentals of dance and movement (there is no extra fee involved in this camp)


2021 Full Band Summer Camp - EVERYONE

·        July 29th – 30th  (Thursday and Friday 7:00 AM- 3:00 PM)

·        August 2nd – 6th (Monday – Friday 7:00 AM – 3:00 PM)

·        August 9th – 13th (Monday – Friday 6:00 PM – 8:15)

Marching Band Camp for all Band members. The first week, we will cover the fundamentals of marching. The second week will focus on learning drill for the competition show. During the second week of August, we will switch to evening rehearsals (6:00-8:15 PM) and prepare for the beginning of school and our first game of the season.

2021 Supply and Fee Night

·       Tuesday, August 3rd(6:00 - 8:30 PM) NHS Band fees for the year are $300.00 which is broken up into 4 payments of $75.00. The second payment is due on supply night (Tues, Aug 3rd) 

Order all of your supplies for the upcoming school year! This includes everything you need from marching shoes, gloves, red duffel bag, and everything in between.

Concert Bands

All competitive groups will compete in a festival and/or UIL Concert and Sight Reading Contest if possible. These classes are ability based, and will challenge you at whatever skill level you are at.

Jazz Band

Jazz Band meets during the school day and performs at various events throughout the school year. The jazz band focuses on various jazz and latin styles of music and also performs at many community events. In order to participate in Jazz Band you must first be enrolled in a band class. This class requires director approval.

Color guard

The color guard is a class that focuses on dance and movement as well as learning to toss flags, rifles and sabres. In the fall, color guard is an extension of our Marching Band and learns a routine that enhances the competition show. In addition color guard participates in all football games, pep rallies, etc. In the spring semester, this class learns an independent floor routine and competes in the North Texas Colorguard Association (NTCA) Circuit. This class is by audition. No experience is required, however previous dance experience is certainly helpful.

Percussion

Percussion is a class that focuses on the continuing development of their skills. In the fall, the percussion is split into two main sections, the battery and the front ensemble. The battery instruments include snare, tenor drums, and multiple bass drums. The front ensemble instruments include all keyboard instruments, as well as specialty instruments utilized in the marching band show. In the spring, percussion classes are broken into ability based groups that will learn music for the concert band competitions, in addition to preparing for the Percussion Concert.
