Texas Scholars

Northwest High School

To Phase-in New Requirements

Texas Scholars is the collective name for our community's incentives and strategies to motivate all students to meet or exceed the requirements of the state's Recommended High School Program. This rigorous course of study, which includes math, science, social studies, and language arts, including languages other than English, helps prepare students with the academic foundation to succeed in whatever they choose to do.

NHS's graduation requirements have increased to parallel the Texas Scholars requirements. Since Texas Scholars is about achieving above the standard, new requirements are being planned for Northwest students to become a Texas Scholar. NHS will phase in the following new requirements for students to be recognized as Texas Scholars:

Beginning with the class of 2005

  • Graduate on the Recommended orDistinguished Plan

  • Make formal application to become a Texas Scholar (applications may be obtained at this site or in the counseling center)

  • Complete the community service component (details included in application)

Beginning with the class of 2008 and thereafter

  • Two additional credits from math and/or science

  • Completion of at least one Advanced Placement course while in high school

  • Participation in at least on NHS extracurricular activity in at least two of the four high school years

  • Must have passed all high school core courses

  • Graduate from high school having completed the Recommended High School Program

  • While in high school, complete at least two courses that are eligible for college credit.
